SUMOHax cheat engine is your go-to tool if you want to begin using cheats and hacks on the just released Pokemon Sun and Moon. SUMOHax only works on the new 3DS and anyone on the old 3DS and the 2DS won’t be able to use this cheat engine for now.

How to Install SumoHAX

  1. Download and install the BootNTR selector to your Nintendo system if you don’t have it already (link and installation guide below)

  3. Launch the BootNTR and wait for the home menu to appear
  4. Launch your game and press A repeatedly to launch the SUMOHAX cheat engine

How to Download Sumohax on 3DS

If you meet the hardware specifications, you will first have to install BootNTR selector which is sort of a bridge to implementing the cheats. I found a great cheat to doing this on Reddit. Here is a link to the guide.

Extract the folder you need, either Moon or Sun to your plugins folder on the 3DS then Launch BootNTR. Wait until you are kicked to the home menu before launching the game and spamming A (continuously press A)

How to Use SUMOHax Cheats

Press select to show your menu. You can navigate the menu using the DPAD keys and will have to press A to activate or deactivate a cheat. Pressing B will exit the menu and return you to the game.

Other things you can do include changing the menu hotkey by pressing [Start] while in the menu and change speed of cheat execution by pressing [select] while in the menu.

How to Hack Pokemon Sun and Moon 2DS

Even though you can play Pokemon Sun and Moon on the 2DS, you cannot use SUMOHax cheats on this platforms due to its inferior hardware. The game already pushes the 2DS to its limits. Adding BootNTR and SUMOHax adds an extra load and your system will reboot every time you try to implement SUMOHax on the game.

The same applies to the old 3DS (03DS.) SUMOHAX wasn’t built for this platform.

The greatest joy in playing any Pokemon game is the ability to get any Pokemon you want. Even though most people are interested in how to get any Pokemon they want without a computer, this guide will involve some bit of hacking that requires you have a computer.

The first step involves opening up your 2DS or 3DS and access your SD card. The new 3DS needs a screwdriver. The old versions will let you pop it out without opening any screws.

If you have the new 3DS, you will need a microSD card reader. If your computer does not have an SD card reader, you can grab a SD to USB card reader to let you access the card on your PC.

There is a detailed guide on how to crack your DS here. I won’t go into that as my guide is interested in helping you get any Pokemon you want on Pokemon sun and Moon, not on how to crack your DS.

Installing FBI into your 3Ds

After hacking your DS, you will have to install another tool that will let you use CIA files in your DS. There will be a warning that you can’t run FBI on a 3DS or 2DS that isn’t running CFW (Custom Firmware.) This is so since for the FBI and CIA files to work, you will have to run unsigned code. You cannot run unsigned code when using the OFW (Original Firmware)

How to Install FBI into your 3DS

  • Download the FBI.zip file here
  • Extract the file contents and copy the FBI folder into the 3DS folder on the SD card
  • The extracted content should have a fbi.cia file. Copy this to the root of your SD card. Alternatively, create a folder in the root folder name cia and copy the fbi.cia here. This is where you will be saving all your .cia files
  • Put the SD back into your 3DS and use the homebrew launcher to locate and install the fbi.cia file you just copied
  • You will now have the FBI app on your home menu

To install CIA files or games, copy the .cia file to your SD card (the root of the cia folder you made) and navigate to it using FBI. The larger the CIA file the longer it takes to install it. It can take up to 30 minutes to install big files.

Now onto the free Pokémon step.

Download JKSM 6-30-2016 from github using this link. You don’t need the source codes, just the JKSM 6-30-2016 file. Open the zip archive and look for the JKSM.cia file. This is what you have to copy to your DS’s cia folder on your 2DS or 3DS memory card.

Put the SD back into your DS and use FBI to navigate to the JKSM.cia file you just copied and install it.
